Turning away from happiness

The other day I was telling someone about the new Amr Khaled’s program and if she watched it. She told me she watched a bit of it and it was something about happiness (it is called “Rahla lilsa’aada”-“Trip to happiness”) but she stopped because she felt it wasn’t affecting her because she is unhappy and depressed. Such a statement seems illogical because the program aims at people who have unhappiness in their life and its reasons. So instead of not watching it this should be a motivator to follow the program yet it had the opposite effect. If you look at the condition of people who are depressed you will realize they have a feeling of hopeless and they shun away from things that talk about happiness or have some form of joy. It seems what is funny stops being funny and what is a form of happiness causes some resentment from such a person. It may be hard at first but this  person has to listen to these issues to break from the cycle of negative things and unhappiness surrounding him/her.

I watched an episode of the program yesterday. One thing Mr. Khaled said rang a bell. He said in one way or another that do not pursue what causes you unhappiness when you think that going after this thing will cause you happiness. This means the person is the cause of his/her own unhappiness by following this thing, goal, etc. This person puts all this effort and time pursuing something supposedly that should make him /her happy when it is the issue that is causing unhappiness.  So I thought about many examples and one being following a desire in inappropriate ways such as money. This person may think that having money will bring joy and might disregard the methods of getting it so he/she goes and deals with drugs, steals people, takes a bribe, etc. and this person ends up with money yet still not satisfied and problems start following from all his/her bad dealings. In the end the person may have gotten what he/she wanted i.e money but no happiness was reached and on the contrary many problems arose.

So be mindful of your deeds and find the reasons for your unhappiness to address them to be on your way to bliss.

Those who believe, and do deeds of righteousness, and establish regular prayers and regular charity, will have their reward with their Lord: on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.
